Alfreton and District Male Voice Choir
Alfreton is a market town close to the Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire border(see map) and is one of the towns making up the Amber Valley Borough Council. Alfreton was recorded in William the Conqueror's 'Doomsday' survey of 1084 as "Elstretune". The parish church of St. Martin's (photo) was founded in 1180 and extended in 14thC, 1868 and 1898. Alfreton Hall was built by the Morewood family in the 1720's; only the 1898 extension now remains being used as a Derbyshire County Council Adult Education Centre. In 1964 the Lido was built on the site of the small lake in the grounds, this has now been demolished and opened as a new heath centre in April 2007. Alfreton House (photo)built in the 1650's is believed to be the oldest in the town, is now used for a range of activities. Alfreton had a Charter Fair in 1251. The original employment in the area was agriculture to which framework knitting was added later. From the 19thC to the late 1960's mining was the main industry. Since the closure of the local mines this has given way to light industry. Alfreton has a strong choral heritage, currently the following choirs are resident in the town-
